Months after DeepSeek’s R1 disrupted the AI landscape, China has delivered another surprise—Manus, a general-purpose AI agent.
"Manus is the most impressive AI tool I've ever tried.
The agentic capabilities are mind-blowing, redefining what's possible.

Manus comes from a relatively unknown startup, Butterfly Effect, based in Beijing and Wuhan. Despite its small footprint, the company claims its agent outperforms OpenAI’s Deep Research on the industry-leading GAIA benchmark.
But is Manus as groundbreaking as it seems? Some early testers discovered signs that it’s actually a “wrapper” built on top of Anthropic’s Claude 3.5—a theory that the startup’s co-founder all but confirmed.
Then again, when you look at tools like Cursor becoming the fastest company to $100M ARR, being a wrapper isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
